Cycology - Inside the Mind of Cy Coleman: Aug 25
Cycology is a cabaret journey inside the mind of American composer Cy Coleman (the man behind the music of Sweet Charity, City of Angels, Barnum and other Tony-winning musicals), which looks at the volatile relationships he had with his various writing partners using his wonderfully complex music.
Written by and starring Richard Woodhouse (Man of La Mancha, The Drowsy Chaperone) and featuring a three-piece jazz band led by Jonathon Holmes (Vaudevillia), Cycology goes in-depth into the life of one of the most celebrated composers of all time, and features some of his stand-alone jazz hits such as Witchcraft, The Best is Yet to Comeand You Fascinate Me So, as well as songs from his Broadway shows.
From his first piano recital at New York Town Hall at the age of 6 to the sold-out concerts he played near the end of his life, Cy Coleman’s career spanned performance, production, film scoring and composition, but he is most well-known for the songs he wrote with his various collaborators. He wrote with 8 different lyricists for Broadway stages alone, and with many more for standalone songs.
Cycology explores his relationships with his varied collaborators, including Carolyn Leigh, Dorothy Fields and Michael Stewart, and brings to life the songs they wrote together to tell the stories of their (usually unhappy) breakups.
Songs from musicals, and the hits recorded by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, are re-imagined in the instrumentation of a jazz trio, invoking the feeling of the jazz clubs Cy used to play with his band at the start of his career.
